Standing Committees and Subcommittees

1) Communications and Marketing Committee

Oversees all MLA communications, including MLA Web site, Michigan Libraries and MLA Forum, to improve the MLA brand and deliver valued membership information.  Develops comprehensive communications plan with MLA staff and evaluates alternative technologies for communication and ad sales/promotions.  Oversight responsibility for publications and other new initiatives.

Subcommittees:

  • Michigan Libraries – Produces bimonthly online MLA newsletter
  • Web Advisory – Maintains, assesses and guides MLA’s web presence

2) Legislative Committee

Monitors legislative and policy issues that impact libraries and make policy recommendations to the Board of Directors.  Informs and educates members about state legislation and policy issues of interest to the membership.  Works closely with MLA lobbyist.  Evaluates survey results and makes recommendations on professional development/training and other efforts to enhance advocacy efforts in the library community.

3) Membership Committee

Reaches out to others in the library community to join or renew their membership, involvement and participation in MLA.  Creates and implements a membership plan to retain current and recruit new members.  Monitors existing MLA products, services, programs and benefits; evaluates membership surveys; explores new benefits and makes recommendations to the Board of Directors.   Assists in analysis and evaluation of member data. Leads efforts to contact non-renewals and prospective members.

4) Professional Development and Networking Committee

Responsible for oversight of all MLA professional development and networking  conferences, workshops, events and distance learning.  Responsible for oversight of all Work Groups and Communities of Practice.   Recommends annual plan for all conferences, workshops and events to the Board of Directors.  Considers membership target markets and survey results to develop programming recommendations.  Anticipates emerging trends and hot topics.  Evaluates distance learning opportunities and alternative delivery mechanisms and recommends new approaches to the Board. Monitors overall professional development budget including partnerships with sponsors and exhibitors. Oversees authorization process for continuing education units.
